Japanese concert pianist Eriko Makimura plays classic music. The program is structured by four different scenes. Each scene represents each season throughout her storytelling, music and significant costumes created by Danish costume designer and milliner Frida Barfod. Frida and Eriko had a three weeks research trip together in Japan, spring 2024 to investigate how come humans are dazzled by the ephemeral moments of cherry blossoms in full bloom and afterwards their quick falling.
According to the Japanese renowned poet Kajii Motojiro, a corpse is buried under a cherry tree. All rotting, maggoty, and unbearably smelly. Yet they’re dripping with a liquid-like crystal. The roots of the cherry tree, like a greedy octopus, clutch at them and suck the fluid, collecting hairy roots like the eating threads of a sea anemone.
We found this illusional contrast underneath and above the cherry trees as fundamental beauty.
The stories of summer, autumn and winter as well as spring will each be presented through music and Frida’s magnificent four scenographic costumes.
