Dear Margo Guryan,
I am delighted to play your super charming “Chopsticks Variations” in my home country Japan, finally!!!
The concert venue is a beautiful buhddistic temple and the reason I would like to play your variations is following:
When I was at the age of five, I was reading a children’s book lying down in a buddhistic temple where one of my relatives was a head chief . It was a very hot summer day. Lying on the tatami mats in the temple’s huge room kept me cool. My relative served me a slice of watermelon and I was busy reading and removing the seeds from watermelon at the same time.
The story of the book was about buddhistic “nirvana”. In the book it said that when people are hungry, they would be served delicious food and one pair of long long chopsticks. You feed the food to the person sitting in front of you at first, then the person would feed you on the next turn.
The story striked me strongly and the memory has been staying in me vividly.
When I got an opportunity to play a concert in the temple, I knew I MUST play your “the chopsticks variations” in there!!!
The concert takes place on 25th, October. I will think of you and play for you, Margo!!!!

親愛なるマルゴ
来る10月25日、私の生まれた日本で、やっと貴女の曲を弾く機会を得ました。
「お箸のバリエーション」・・・。貴女が作ったこのチャーミングな曲を初めて弾いたのは、2011年、デンマークでの東日本大震災のためのチャリティーコンサートでした。
あれから3年経ち、日本でのお寺でのコンサートのお話が持ち上がり、私が真っ先に思い浮かべた曲は、貴女の「お箸のバリエーション」でした。それには私の幼年時代の或る記憶が深く関係しているのです。
あれは私が5歳の時。暑い夏の盛りで、私は祖父が生まれたお寺の本堂で、寝転がりながら本を読んでいました。ひんやりとした畳の上で読んでいたのは、子供用の絵本で、お寺の蔵書らしく「極楽」という題名の本でした。
実はその前に同じシリーズの「地獄」を読んでいた私は、恐ろしさにブルブル震えていたのですが、「極楽」の章は例えようもない美しさで描かれており、小さな私の胸は深い安堵で満たされていくのが感じられました。
「極楽」では、人が空腹を感じると、美味しそうなお膳が目の前に現れます。お膳には長い長いお箸が添えられています。そして、お膳の向こうには優しそうなお友達が座っています。
まず、そのお友達が、その長い長いお箸を使って、あなたにお膳のご飯を食べさせてくれます。そしてその次はあなたがそのお箸でお友達に食べさせてあげる番です。
そのシーンは美しい色彩のついた絵で描かれており、この物語は私の幼い脳裏に強烈に焼きつき、その後も今に到るまで、お寺の本堂の芳ばしい畳の香りと共に想い出す、ノスタルジアとなっています。
親愛なるマルゴ、5歳だった私は日本、海外で多くの経験をし、様々な国籍の様々な人と知遇を得て、また日本で演奏することとなりました。
幼年時代に、お寺で得たニルヴァーナとお箸の記憶を、大人になった今、お寺で貴女の「お箸のバリエーション」を弾くことによって、繋いでゆきたい・・・。
その思いを胸に、チャーミングに、愛らしく、ユーモアに富んだ演奏を目指します。
貴女にいつか逢える日を、心待ちにしています。
